International Conference

Culture Matters
Understanding Development from
the Perspectives of Marginal Communities

Call for papers

This International Conference is being held to discuss the possibility of a new framework to understand development from the perspectives of marginal communities. "Culture" certainly in this context provides the most important lens as widely agreed across the globe. The papers to be submitted at the workshop should focus on the following broad themes:

• Alternative Indicators of Change and Well Being
• Cultural and Ec!ological Resources, Communities and Survival
• Solidarity, Communities and Development
• Diversity, Multiple Voices and Development
• Culture, Dignity and Empowerment
• Capabilities, Culture and Marginal Communities
• Social Taboos, Livelihood and Sustainability
• Institutions, Communities and Modernity
• Mobility, Marginality and Development

Paper submission

Research papers of publishable quality focusing on the above themes are invited form young and established scholars which will be chosen for presentation and intensive discussion in the conference. Authors are invited to submit abstracts (in English) of no more than 500 words as well as academic curriculum vitae. Proposals much reach through email at the following address desh13@rediffmail.com by 30th April, 2006. The draft of the selected papers (6000-7000) is due by 31st July, 2006 to ensure that airline tickets and other arrangements can be done in good time.

Publication

Deshkal Society will undertake to publish a selection of suitably referred papers soon after the conference.

Travel costs

The organizers will cover travel costs and other participation expenses for successful applicants. However, air tickets will be issued only receipt of acceptable papers i.e. the paper submission deadline must be met. Abstract submitted after the deadline will only be considered depending on the perspective of the proposed paper in meeting the overall objective of the conference.
