The School's PhD Programs

Architecture and Construction - Space and Society

Landscape and Environment Design Management and Planning

Presentation

The Doctoral School in Architectural Sciences groups five PhD programs within "Sapienza" University of Rome. The PhD programs are:

  • Architecture and Construction - Space and Society, active in the Architectural Design Department since 2004;
  • Landscape and Environment Design Management and Planning, in the Architectural Design Department since 2009.

The Doctoral School will in the future include other PhD programs confronting the vast amount of topics concurring to the education of researchers and professionals in the field of architectural design, urban planning, building restoration, industrial design, building technology and energy conservation. By setting these issues at the center of their educational and research activities, the grouped PhD programs are able to provide high-level teaching on relevant problems. These are in fact the questions concerning the knowledge and capacities which, in professional and entrepreneurial activity, as well as within public administrations, are of fundamental importance to allow the control of the complex process leading from the construction to the management of today’s cities and architecture, the conservation and maintenance of existing heritage, and the strategies to achieve a higher architectural and environmental quality of artifacts.
The School sets its foundations in the consideration that Architecture constitutes a central theme in the cultural, social, and economic development of society, and was established with the certainty that the grouping of distinct doctoral programs referring to these themes represents and added value under several points of view:

  • The achievement of an effective cultural, teaching and organizational coordination;
  • The national and international promotion of the School’s activities, through the collaboration with other universities and research centers, complementing the themes which are already being studied in the individual PhD programs;
  • The promotion of ever increasing collaboration with central and local public administrations;
  • The increase in relationships with the industrial and entrepreneurial realities active in urban development and regeneration, environmental sustainability and cultural promotion.

Given these main objectives, the Doctoral school aims at promoting, organizing and coordinating advanced teaching activities in the relevant sectors, while preserving the individual programs’ autonomy. The School wishes to contribute to the overall quality of the PhD programs, increase coordination and synergies and, finally, to promote internationalization and interdisciplinary activities.

In all the above mentioned areas, the PhD programs have achieved a good capacity in training researchers and professionals with high qualification, while producing, despite their recent institution, high-level research outputs in the international perspective. The Faculty groups are composed by nationally and internationally recognized experts in the various fields.
In the above-mentioned thematic areas, the research topics characterizing the PhD programs and numerous and diversified:
