RESEARCH ACTIVITY

The research activity is documented by the list of publications.

Fundamental research

From 1975 works in the field of Systems and Control Theory with contributions in several classical problems: linear time varying realization, state affine realization, modeling, nonlinear realization, nonlinear control in continuous and discrete time contexts, digital control.

Applied research in spacecraft control

From 1982 he works on the application of nonlinear control to space systems taking care of both the methodological and experimental aspects.

RESEARCH COORDINATION

1984 – 1989, Coordinator of a research group on digital control and discrete time systems at the University of l'Aquila in the framework of the national project “ Teoria del Controllo ” supported by the Ministerium of Research

1987 - 1991, Co-responsable, with D. Normand-Cyrot, of an European Network on Digital Control.

- coordinator of national projects in System and Control Theory, supported by the italian Ministerium of University and Scientific and Tecnological Research – MURST, in 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997;

- projects on “Spacecraft Control ” supported by the Italian Space Agency – ASI – for the development of fundamental research in space, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2002;
- “ Orbital Control ” a coordinated project at the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' supported by the MURST, 1992 to present ;

- co-responsible of European Networks on Hybrid Systems in1998

Member of the International Program Committee of several international Conferences. Chairman of the Organizing Commettee of the First IFAC Symposium on “ Nonlinear Control Systems Design ” (Capri, 1989). Chairman and organizer of sessions on nonlinear control, digital systems and applications in International Conferences.

1991 - 1997, Member of the Executive Council of the European Control Community Association (E.U.C.A.).

1990 - 1994, Member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Space Agency (A.S.I.) representing the scientific community of researchers in the areas of “ Automatica ” and “ Informatica ”.


COORDINATION AND INITIATIVES IN EDUCATION

Member elected at the Executive Council of the University of l'Aquila, where he served from 1986 to 1989 participating to several commissions for research and didactic organization.

He promoted and coordinated the organization of new curricula in Engineering :
- a degree of "Laurea" in Automatic Control at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", activated from 2001 ;
- a Master "post-laurea" in the Engineering of the Emergency, in cooperation between « La Sapienza » and gouvernemental organisms.

He promoted the constitution of a Committee, il « Comitato delle technologie sostenibili per il sviluppo umano » between the University « La Sapienza » and humanitary institutions, for developing initatives on «the sustenible technologies for human development ».

Member, from 2000 to 2008, of the Executive Council of « NETTUNO » - a consortium between italian universities coordinating multimedia and distance learning -, representing the University of Roma « La Sapienza », he is, from october 2000, Responsible of its « Polo Tecnologico » : the unit which delivers education by distance learning at the University « La Sapienza ».

Member of the SEFI, « Société Européenne pour la Formation des Ingénieurs », representing the University of l'Aquila – from 1986 to 1989 -, he promoted since the eighties exchanges of students in the framework of European Programmes for the mobility. Member of the Commission ERASMUS-SOCRATES of the University of Rome « La Sapienza », he promoted mobilities and agreements for the achievement of double titles between the University of Rome and some french « Grandes Ecoles ».

From 2000, he coordinates a project supported by the italian MURST, for potentiating the mobility between Italy and France at the different levels of the universitary education and for designing curricula which can be recognized in the two countries.

Nominated Member of the Scientific Committee of the University « franco-italienne/italo-francese », an inter-governamental institution for coordinating exchanges and cultural initiatives between France and Italy, he served as Chairman from 2001 to 2005.

INITIATIVES IN THE AREA OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

The transfert of the control and system methodologies to applicative sectors as industrial automation and space technologies inspired, from the eighties, some initiatives :
- the constitution of SIMUTEL, a consortium between the university of l'Aquila and private societies in the field of Automation, where he served as President from 1988 to 1994 ;
- the participation to the settlement of the « Technological Park » of the University of L’Aquila, as member, from 1993 to 1994, of the the Executive Council of CERSFA a consortium in the field of Integrated Manifacturing ;
- the settlement a Laboratory of System and Control at The Department of Informatica e Sistemistica – www.sistemi.ing.uniroma1.it – and the development of Projects with industries operating in space technologies which brought to the realization of SACS – Satellite Attitude Control Simulator – an experimental platform for attitude control patented by the Italian Space Agency ;
- the Membership of the International Mars Exploration Working Group from 1993 to 1996.


NOT UNIVERSITARY POSITIONS

Major positions occuped by the candidate in the framework of technological transfert are :
- Chairman and Member of the Executive Councils of the overmentioned consortia – SIMUTEL from 1988 to 1994, CERSFA from 1993 to 1994, respectively.
- Member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Space Agency - ASI, from 1989 to 1994, representing the scientific communities of the information technology area ;
- Member of the Technological Committee of ASI, from 1996 to 1999 ;
- Member of the Working Group on the evaluation of ASI, from 2000 to 2001.

Other activities:
- Scientific advisor, in 1995, to the Director of the Joint Research Center – JRC -, the international research center of the European Union ;
- Member of the Commissions for the evaluation of national projects for the italian participation to the International Space Station in 1999 and 2000 ;
- Chairman of the Commission for the Certification of the italian "Standard Space Platform" for small space missions - MITA « Minisatellite Italiano a Tecnologia Avanzata », from 1999 to 2000 ;
- Member, from 1991 to 1996, of CEI – Comitato Elettrotecnico Italiano


TEACHING EXPERIENCE

From 1978 he teachs courses on System and Control Theory and their applications in different area : from civil engineering, through bioengineering to mechanical engineering and space technologies.

Basic courses on Automatic Control for Electrical and Mechanical Engineering - at the Universities of L’Aquila, from 1978 to 1993, and Rome, from 1983 to 1985 - and System Theory for Electrical Engineering - at the University of Rome « La Sapienza » from 1987 to present -.

Advanced courses in Automatic Control and Digital Control for Nuclear and Electrical Engineering at the University of Rome – 1986 and 1991 to 1993, 2000 -.

Speciality courses of Automatic Control for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Rome - from 1994 to 1997 and 1998 to 2000.

From 1980, he has been « relatore » of nearly 200 theses for achieving the degree of « Laurea » in several engineering specialities and of 10 doctoral theses in the area of system and control theory and aerospace applications.

He has been co-director of nearly ten french doctoral theses in the area of system and control theory and electrotecnical applications ; he served as « rapporteur » of eight doctoral theses and one « thèse d’Habilitation», participated and chaired several « jury » of doctoral theses.
