Mission statement

The Urban Studies Centre for the Developing Countries (Centro PVS) was created in May 1987 by the Department of Territorial and Urban Planning of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” (DIPTU). Its aims are to advance knowledge on territorial, urban and human settlement issues with a special focus on development cooperation with developing countries, and to enhance the international role of DIPTU in the fields of research, training, training and professional knowledge.

The Centro’s activities are disseminated by means of a bulletin, “Millennium Cities”.

Millennium Cities

Millennium Cities is the electronic bulletin of the Centro PVS. Its aim is to provide information on ongoing and future activities and initiatives and to develop a dialogue with all those interested in urban/territorial research, training and planning in developing countries.

Why “Millennium Cities”?

All countries have endorsed the “ Millennium Development Goals” (MDGs) to reduce poverty and hunger, promote access to health and education, gender equality, environmental protection and the improvement of living conditions in informal urban settlements (“slums”). But poverty is becoming more and more “urban”. During the next thirty years, virtually all of the world’s population growth will take place in the cities of the developing countries. Hence the need to position urban studies, policies, programmes and projects at the centre of the efforts of the cities of the South to reach the MDGs through poverty reduction strategies and settlement planning and upgrading. Cities committed to this goal would earn the title of “Millennium Cities”.
