The name Leplab stands for Laser Evoked Potentials Lab. Our main interest is focused on how the affective and cognitive variables can modulate the nociceptive response and the integrative cortical modulation processes that end up in pain perception. Since pain is a worldwide social relevant issue, the aim of our researches is to either have future clinical application or impact on the understanding of basic brain functions. Indeed, pain constitutes a good model to probe theories about shared representation of the emotional and sensorial state of the other and its related disfunctions. Our studies use to investigate the neurophysiological responses to nociceptive stimuli and their interaction with cognitive and emotional processing, as for instance: anticipation, perspective taking and emotional contagion. In particular, we want to discover if evoked brain responses can be modulated by the observation of different kind of stimuli (mainly body-related), by trait and state empathy, or by altered arousal states. All of our experiments on healthy volunteers by means of a YAP laser (El.En. Group) and a 64 channels EEG recording system. Our lab location is at the I.R.C.C.S. Fondazione Santa Lucia, Rome. |
